What Kind Of People Are We?
I've been searching for words ... and then George Will lands in the mailbox where I work: "All of the great arguments that have roiled American politics over the years have not been pocketbook issues. They have been about the soul of the country and what kind of people we would be. ... [t]he kind of people we are is a people who rise to the challenge ..." We disperse decision-making; we allow people to establish contracts protected by law; we let people rise to the level of their talent. And the foundation ideas of freedom and democracy we cherish give us the strength to shape the future.

Still ... if it's not about the money, why is Tom DeLay in a position of power, however untitled, still?

Question, answer, more questions.

A Thin Veneer
Whew ... a lot can happen in a month! The biggest revelation is how thin the veneer of civilization is in these United States. A few feet of water, some wind, and whoa, nelly ... Third World right here at home, and on television for all around the world to see. It seems like the more infrastructure you have, the harder it is to respond to a disaster. How sad for us.
